Tianhou Temple is located on the Ancient Culture Street, facing the Hai River, a major artery for the city of Tianjin. Tianhou is also known as Mazu (the Goddess of the Sea and the patron deity of fishermen). In memory of her, the Tianhou Temple was first built in the 3rd year of Taiding Period, Yuan Dynasty (1326A.D.) but was repaired many times in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The temple was originally named Tianfei (Princess of Heaven) Temple, West Temple and Niangniang Temple. The Tianhou Temple is made up of the Front Hall (Qian Dian), Grand Hall (Da Dian), Cangjing Pavilion (Cangjing Ge), Bell Tower (Zhong Lou), Drum Tower (Gu Lou), gateways and many other buildings. The complex architecture with wooden structure is in the style of the middle and late Ming Dynasty (1368 -1644). The temple is one of the three biggest Tianhou Temples in China and also the oldest one still existing. Since 1986, it is also where the Folk Custom Museum resides.
