Zhongshan, meaning 'Middle Mountain' in Chinese, has sprung into industrial prominence with the help of returning overseas Chinese keen to invest in its vast potential. A surprisingly green city, for all its industrial activity, Zhongshan, was no more than a patch of countryside in southern Guangdong province 20 years ago. Agriculture centers around fishing, giving testimony to the efficient environment-protection measures put in place here, especially in relation to the city's lakes. Zhongshan is also the hometown of revolutionary hero Dr. Sun Yatsen, the first president of the Republic of China. Dr. Sun's Residence Memorial Museum, a solemn place of pilgrimage for Chinese, recreates the house (the original was torn down in 1913) where Sun grew up. It is a popular tourist attraction. One of the first foreign joint ventures in China, Zhongshan Hot Spring is famous for its more than 30 hot springs as well as its golf course. Activities include swimming, massage and a nighttime entertainment.
Within the city confines, Sunwen West Road, a commercial pedestrian street of restored pastel-colored shopfronts and arcades, built by overseas Chinese from Singapore in the late 19th and early 20th century, are a big attraction. Some of hybrid Asian or Western structures, known as 'Zhongshan Style' retain their unique original stained glass.
Just north of Sunwen West Road is Zhongshan Park , a scenic wooded refuge dominated by the seven-story Fufeng Culture Pagoda, built in 1608 makes a pleasant stop to unwind. Seafood dominates local fare and comes in large varieties. More adventurous visitors can try local dishes made of chrysanthemums or snakes. Name:Zhongshan Zhongshan City:Zhongshan Address: Admission:
