Located in the southern part of Guangdong province, Zhuhai is one of the five Special Economic Zones established in China at the start of the country's reform and opening-up. Perched along the South China Sea, and composed of 146 islands, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao all lie in close proximity to Zhuhai. Though it's in the subtropics, Zhuhai enjoys a mild climate, is therefore regarded as one of the most pleasant places in southern China in which to live. Clean and green, Zhuhai is a young city that really took off after the introduction of China's reform and opening-up policy in the late 1970s. Plenty of people with various talents went to contribute to the city's construction, and it has since become an important university center for Guangdong Province.
One of its most popular places of interest is New Summer Palace , opened in 1997. This is set in a mountain valley and designed in a similar fashion to the famed Old Summer Palace in Beijing. It therefore has the special vibe found in the more famous park in the capital, as well as spectacularly modern tourist facilities.
Jiuzhou City is a landmark building in Zhuhai that cannot be missed by tourists. Then, head for the White Ratten Lake , where you can have a tranquil seafood picnic set against stunning natural scenery.
Each year the Zhuhai Folk Arts Festival takes place in the city. It's a great opportunity for tourists to marvel at the local folk arts and customs. Zhuhai's restaurants can supply the hungry traveler with each and every one of Guangdong's world-renowned specialty snacks.
